I recently bought a new NAS, after my old one turned ten. I am very satisfied with the reliability of my old QNAP which is still supported with software updates. This makes me a happy customer, and so I did not see any reason to switch brands. After initial setup (networking, firmware update, disabling most services) I did not get around to finishing its setup for a few days. It basically sat there from late May 2020 to early July 2020. Somehow it contracted QSnatch in that timeframe. I’ll explain what I did differently after that.

Die Green-Serie von WD ist an sich toll: Sie hat zusätzliche Stromspar-Funktionen, die für den Hausgebrauch einigermaßen sinnvoll sind. So fährt zum Beispiel der Lese-Schreibkopf nach wenigen Sekunden schon in eine Parkposition, was die Marketing-Menschen “Intellipark” nannten. Intellipark ist für einige Linux-Geschmacksrichtungen aber schlecht konfiguriert – die Platte geht für wenige Sekunden in die Parkposition, nur, um gleich wieder heraus gerissen zu werden. Ärgerlich ist das, weil man das zwar ganz schön oft, aber eben nicht unendlich oft machen kann. 300.000 Parkvorgänge gibt der Hersteller als gesundes Maß an.

Im Privatgebrauch habe ich ein QNAP-NAS (459 Pro+, Firmware 3.8.3). Es dient als Backup-Speicher und als zentrales Lager für Musik. Anders als “normale” Server, muss es also nicht durchgängig laufen. Wie ich meinen Stromverbrauch reduziert habe, beschreibe ich hier. Read the rest of this entry »
